Community resources – Local organizations and support services, which offer programs and/or information to families, related to specific needs.

Down syndrome – A chromosomal disorder characterized by mental retardation and physical abnormalities. Most cases are the result of an extra chromosome, the most common being trisomy 21. Down syndrome occurs in approximately one of 700 newborns but the risk increases for mothers over 35.

Family-centered approach– Working with the family as a unit to address issues related to a specific problem based on the philosophy that a chronic or life-threatening illness affects the entire family.

Family counseling – Family therapy with a treatment goal of acquiring knowledge and support in relating to your family environment, as well as living with a chronic or life-threatening illness.

Individual counseling – Individual therapy with the treatment goal of acquiring knowledge and support in relating to your environment in living with a chronic or life-threatening illness.

Psycho-education – Education or information about the relationship between factual information and emotional response.

Psychosocial assessments - Comprehensive evaluation to assess a family's level of functioning, which leads to determine a mutually beneficial treatment plan.

Psychotherapy – Individual, group, family, and/or parent counseling.

Referral services- Information about community resources offered by those with expertise and experience in a specific area.

Support groups - Group therapy with peers that facilitates knowledge and support among family members and helps individuals with Down syndrome improve their quality of life while living with a chronic or life-threatening illness.
